Blu-ray vs DVD – Which is Better?

Blu-ray and standard DVDs are the two most prominent disc media to watch movies and TV shows. Blu-ray is the newest among the two and offers myriads of advantages over DVD. Let’s compare aspects of both disc Medias.

Storage:

Blu-ray: A single layer Blu-ray disc holds around 25GB data where as a dual layer disc holds as much as 50GB data. Its capacity is a clear advantage of Blu-ray discs over normal DVDs.

DVD: A standard DVD on the other hand holds around 4.7GB data and a dual layer disc holds about 8.5-8.7GB. This capacity is much smaller compared to Blu-ray discs.

Cost:

Blu-ray: Initially Blu-ray discs and players were priced very high, but now these are more affordable than ever. Blu-ray discs costs a little more than regular DVDs, but because of its capacity, clarity and quality, this extra is totally worth paying.

DVD: DVD players and discs costs cheaper than Blu-rays.

Quality:

Blu-ray: Blu-rays have larger storage capacity. Because of this, it can hold much more videos, audios and other data. Apart from this, the quality of these videos and audios are outstanding. Blu-ray discs support resolutions up to 1920×1080, along with 29.97 frame rates in highest resolution. Blu-ray discs can playback in true HD format.

DVD: DVDs have much lower storage capacity and it is not possible to have true HD video quality on standard DVDs.

3D:

Blu-ray: All latest 3D movies are distributes in Blu-rays only.

DVD: Although there are 3D DVDs, but latest movies are produced in Blu-rays only.
